Privacy policy

This privacy policy serves to fulfil the information obligations under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and informs you about the type, scope, and purpose of the processing of personal data in the context of the blog Der (europäische) Föderalist and the associated online presences, such as the blog’s social media profiles.

Personal data is any information about personal or factual circumstances of an identified or identifiable natural person, such as name, address, e-mail address, or telephone number. In principle, such data is only collected to a very limited extent when using the basic functions of this blog (in particular when reading articles). For more detailed information, please refer to the following explanations.

Controller

The data controller within the meaning of data protection law is:

Dr Manuel Müller
Finnish Institute of International Affairs
Arkadiankatu 23 B
00100 Helsinki
manuel.mueller <at> foederalist.eu

Your rights as a data subject

You can exercise the following rights at any time using the contact details provided:

  • information about your data stored by me and its processing,
  • correction of incorrect personal data,
  • deletion of your data stored by me,
  • restriction of data processing if I am not yet allowed to delete your data due to legal obligations,
  • data portability, provided that you have consented to the data processing or have concluded a contract with me.

You can object to the processing of your data by me at any time. If you have given me your consent, you can revoke it at any time with effect for the future.

You can contact the supervisory authority responsible for you at any time with a complaint.

Purposes of data processing by the controller and third parties

I process your personal data only for the purposes stated in this privacy policy. Your personal data will not be transferred to third parties for purposes other than those stated. I will only pass on your personal data to third parties if:

  • you have given your express consent to this,
  • the processing is necessary for the fulfilment of a contract with you
  • the processing is necessary to fulfil a legal obligation, or
  • the processing is necessary to safeguard legitimate interests and there is no reason to assume that you have an overriding interest worthy of protection in the non-disclosure of your data.

Deletion of data

In accordance with the principles of data avoidance and data minimisation, I only store your personal data for as long as is necessary to achieve the purposes stated here or as provided for by the statutory storage periods. Thereafter, the corresponding data will be blocked or deleted.

Cookies

Like many other websites, also this one uses so-called “cookies”. These are small text files that are transferred from a web server to your hard drive. As a result, the server automatically receives certain data such as your IP address, browser, operating system, and connection to the Internet. This information enables the website to be displayed correctly and makes it easier for you to navigate. Cookies are also used, for example, to record the number of visitors per page. However, cookies cannot be used to start programmes or transfer viruses to a computer.

In principle, you can also view this website without using cookies. Internet browsers are usually set to accept cookies. In general, you can deactivate the use of cookies at any time via your browser settings. Please note that you may not be able to use certain functions of this website if you have deactivated the use of cookies.

This blog is hosted by the Blogger service provided by Google (Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA). Information about how Google uses cookies can be found here. Google is certified under the Privacy Shield Agreement and thus offers a guarantee of compliance with European data protection law. You can find further information in Google’s privacy policy.

Comment function / Google ReCaptcha

If you use the comment function on the blog, the data you enter (and possibly other personal data, such as your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored on servers operated by Google (Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA). The Google function for recognising bots (“ReCaptcha”) is also integrated into the blog’s comment function.

Google is certified under the Privacy Shield Agreement and thus offers a guarantee of compliance with European data protection law. You can find further information in Google’s privacy policy.

Contacting me

If you contact me (e.g. by e-mail), I will store your contact details (e.g. your e-mail address) and other information you provide in order to process the enquiry and any follow-up questions. If it is no longer necessary to store this data, I will delete it. As a rule, I review the necessity every two years.

VG Wort

This website uses VG Wort’s METIS access count to measure access to online texts in order to record the copy probability of these texts. The likelihood of a text being copied forms the basis for the lawful distribution of remuneration by VG Wort to the authors and publishers of these texts in accordance with the German Copyright Act (UrhG).

For this purpose, a “counter” is integrated into the source code of the respective online text as part of the METIS access count. This counter is a unique ID assigned to the respective text and means that when a text labelled in this way is visited, access to this text can be counted. In addition, a client ID is created as part of the METIS access count and a so-called “METIS session cookie” is set for the user of the marked text. This client ID and the session cookie can be used to recognise whether or not the text has already been accessed by this user within a browser session. This is intended to prevent unlawful multiple counting of this text when determining its copy probability. No personal data is processed either by the session cookie or at any other time during the METIS access count.

The METIS access count is carried out for VG Wort by Kantar GmbH, Landsberger Straße 284, 80687 Munich, Germany.

Quiz / involve.me

Interactive elements on some pages of this blog (specifically as part of the 2021 EU German policy quiz) were created using software from stereosense GmbH (Margaretenstraße 29/7, 1040 Vienna, Austria) and are embedded here from the involve.me website. When you use the quiz, your answers and various anonymised metadata (such as your country or the time you need to complete the quiz) are sent to involve.me and are automatically made available to me. I do not systematically analyse this data myself. Further information on the use of data by involve.me can be found in the privacy policy of involve.me.

Social media presence

I maintain online presences in social networks (Facebook, X, Bluesky, Mastodon) for this blog in order to be able to communicate with the users active there. When accessing these networks, the terms and conditions and data processing guidelines of their respective operators apply.

Integrated tweets

So-called “tweets”, i.e. content and functions of the X service (formerly Twitter; X Corp, 1355 Market Street, Suite 900, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA), can be integrated into articles on the blog. This may include, for example, images, videos or texts and buttons with which users can express their liking of a content or subscribe to its author. If the users are members of X, X can assign the access to these contents and functions to the user profiles there. Further information can be found in X’s privacy policy.

Changes to the privacy policy

I reserve the right to amend this privacy policy so that it always complies with current legal requirements or to implement changes to the website in the privacy policy. The new privacy policy will then apply to your next visit.

This data protection declaration was created with the help of the data protection declaration generator of activeMind AG and Datenschutz-Generator.de by RA Dr Thomas Schwenke and adapted and translated by the owner of the website.
