On 23 February, the EU’s largest member state will hold parliamentary elections, the results of which will of course have an impact beyond Germany’s borders. Yesterday, the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) hosted a discussion on the latest developments and prospects for the new election period: Where do the parties stand a week and a half before the election? What have been the main themes of the campaign? What will become of the “firewall” against the AfD? And what does all this mean for German foreign and European policy in the coming years?
At the heart of the event was a guest lecture by Nicolai von Ondarza, head of the EU/Europe research division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. The panel, moderated by Marco Siddi, also included Tuomas Iso-Markku, Sanna Salo, and Manuel Müller (all FIIA). The event was held in English at the Finnish Parliament in Helsinki.
